June 27, 2008

The Bulgarian Peptide Society, under the auspices of the European Peptide Society, organized the 5th Bulgarian Peptide Symposium, that took place in Rila mountain resort Bachinovo, May 28 - 30, 2008.

The aim of the symposium was to bring together peptide researchers and scientists early in their careers and to give them a common forum to present and discuss their work. A total 70 participants registered from different Bulgarian universities, laboratories, organizations and hospitals.

Attendees included Prof. Jean Martinez, Prof. Ettore Benedetti, Prof. Anna-Maria Papini, Prof. Beatriu Escuder, Prof. Rudolph Willem, Dr. Tzvetana Lazarova and young foreign participants.

The financial support from the European Peptide Society, MakMetal, Aquachim, University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, SofiaMed, and South-West University of Blagoevgrad allowed us to invite several distinguished scientists and to enable the participation of more than 15 young scientists and students.

During the three days, a total 15 lectures and 38 posters were presented. Two memorial lectures in tribute to Prof. D.Sc. Dimiter Petkov, outlining his life and scientific achievements, were presented. The national representatives of the Bulgarian Peptide Society in the European Peptide Council, Prof. D.Sc. Lyubomir Vezenkov, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tamara Pajpanova, officially opened the symposium on the Wednesday afternoon. The welcoming speech was presented by Prof. Jean Martinez and Prof. Ettore Benedetti.

The lectures discussed different topics in peptide research. The lectures were presented by Prof. J. Martinez, Prof. E. Benedetti, Prof. A. Papini, Prof. L. Vezenkov, Prof. B. Escuder, Prof. B. Tchorbanov, Dr. Tz. Lazarova, Dr. D. Danalev, Dr. S. Vezenkov, Dr. D. Tzekova, L. Van Lokeren (Ph.D. student), Dr. Camelia Mihai, Dr. O. Apostolov, and B. Benkova (Ph.D. student).

The scientific program also included a poster session and awards were given to the best three scientific works presented by young scientists.

The lectures and posters covered topics such as structure-activity studies on bioactive peptides, peptidomimetics, physiological studies on bioactive peptides, synthesis and physiological studies of modified amino acids and structural and conformational analysis of peptides, isolation and biological activity of natural peptides, kinetic investigation and theoretical studies on peptide mimetics, proteomic and neuropeptides investigations.
